Block Drop Game

Turn and steer the falling pieces to fill rows from wall to wall. A full row clears, and every 10 rows the level goes up and the pieces fall faster. Keep the stack from reaching the top.

Block Drop

← → move, ↑ turn, Space drops, C holds. On a touch screen, use the buttons or drag and tap the well.

Keys: ← → move (hold to slide), ↓ soft drop, Space hard drop, ↑ or X turn clockwise, Z turn counterclockwise, C or Shift hold, and P or Esc pause. Touch: use the buttons, or on the well drag sideways to move, tap to turn, drag down to soft drop, flick down to hard drop, and flick up to hold.

How to play: the pieces come in shuffled sets of all seven shapes, so you never wait more than 12 pieces for any shape. The outline at the bottom (the ghost) shows where the piece will land. Hold sets the current piece aside for later, once per piece. Clearing 1, 2, 3, or 4 rows at once scores 100, 300, 500, or 800 points times the level; a soft drop adds 1 point per row and a hard drop 2. The game ends when the stack reaches the top of the well.

Control settings

Holding ← or → moves the piece one cell, waits for the slide delay, then keeps moving it one cell per slide interval. An interval of 0 slides it straight to the wall. The defaults are 160 ms and 40 ms. Settings are saved in this browser.

Turning, locking, and speed

Each piece turns about the center of its 3 × 3 box (4 × 4 for the long bar; the square doesn’t turn). If the turned piece would overlap a wall or the stack, it tries these spots in order and takes the first that fits: one cell toward the turn (right for clockwise, left for counterclockwise), one cell the other way, one cell up, then one up and one toward the turn, and one up and one the other way. The long bar also tries two cells toward the turn, two cells the other way, and two cells up, so it can stand up while it lies flat on the floor or on the stack. If none fits, the piece doesn’t turn.

A piece that lands has half a second before it locks in place. Moving or turning it restarts that half second, up to 15 times, and the count starts over when the piece drops to a row lower than it has been. At level 1 the pieces fall one row per second. Each level cuts the time per row by 18%, up to level 20, where they fall about 43 rows per second.
